Roll on Whirlies

Grimsley wins.  I couldn’t be more proud of Jackson and his partners in pigskin.

Although their defensive play arguably won tonight’s quarter-final game against a very talented Mt. Tabor team, it was individual efforts on the part of Grimsley’s offense that put points on the board.

I wish I had a video of last night’s remarkable rushing touchdown by Whirlies all-around great player Robert Lane (N&R).  (Update: WFMY-TV has streaming video of the play, and more) Just when you think the guy has been tackled, he emerges from the pile of bodies having never placed a knee on the turf.  I’ve never seen anything like the way he can turn what at first looks like either a yardage loss, or a short yardage play, into a first down, and many times into a touchdown.

‘Phoenix’ Lane should become the moniker for Grimsley’s star player and champions in waiting aptly describes this year’s Grimsley team.  At this point only two victories are keeping the Whirlies from a state football championship.

Update: Here’s expanded coverage by the N&R.
