A volatile mess in Durham

The captains of Duke University’s men’s lacrosse team have issued a statement regarding allegations of gang-rape by members of their sqaud…

We (s)tated unequivocally that any allegation that a sexual assault or rape occurred is totally and transparently false.”

Despite that, Duke’s president has suspended the balance of the highly ranked team’s season, ”…until there is a clearer resolution of the legal situation involving team members.”

DNA samples were take from 46 of the 47 members of the team yesterday and results are expected back from the SBI in record time.  The one member who was not tested is the only black member of the team because the alleged victim described her attacker(s) as white men.  More from the Herald Sun.  ABC News.

As a temporary resident hereabouts, I can tell you that Raleigh and Durham are absolutely abuzz over this whole affair.  There are subtexts and overtones at play, including deep-seated issues of race and privilege.  From what I’m hearing (audio, TSOT – WUNC), these matters will not likely be quelled regardless of the outcome of this whole mess.  ABC News coverage here.

Durham had better buckle up and step straight, because after cases in Illinois and California recently in which rape suspects were acquitted despite strong evidence of their guilt, the whole country is going to be watching this one.
