Summer re-runs: The Skip and Billy Show

First off, I’m convinced that the Simkins PAC made the decision to weigh in on the Willie Best matter just to send Joe Guarino into a kinniption fit.

But more to the point, I agree with Allen Johnson:  “…Unless the commissioners have got a very good reason — beyond personality and politics — this would be bad for Best, bad for the commissioners and very bad for Guiiford County.

From my view the county has been running along just fine since Best took the helm in ’03.  As a matter of fact, since he took over from Roger Cotten, our Board of Commissioners have been downright boring, but effective, in what they were elected to do: namely good governance.  They have, for the most part, minded the county’s business sans all of the histrionics that used to be thier hallmark.  But maybe that is the crux of the problem that launched this whole thing that will play out on television tonight.

Perhaps Skip Alston and Billy Yow are bored with their elected jobs and decided to stir things up.  Perhaps Yow has some leftover ‘pee-on-the-NAACP’ t-shirts he needs to sell and Alston has so much pent-up desire to call someone, anyone, a racist that they concocted this flap so that both of their needs can be met.

Best and assistant manager David McNeill seem to have, in effect, set up a co-management arrangement that ‘ain’t broke’ as far as the general public is aware of.  In light of the fact that ‘fixin’ it’ will certainly cause more harm than good, especially in Guilford County’s always-strained and always-at-the-forefront race relations, I sincerely hope our Commissioners will let Billy and Skip wallow in their latest spotlight grab on television tonight then vote to keep Willie Best in charge and just go back to being boring.

We liked it that way.

This ought to get The Chairman going to. Of course we’ll never be sure because it’s hard to tell what he’s saying.

You’ll want a super-jumbo, sized box of popcorn for that.

    Some Paxil wouldn’t hurt either.

Might want to consider an extra-large jar of Vaseline, too.

I have to agree that I don’t understand what the big issue is all of a sudden given Best just had a performance review and the Commissioners got a budget passed prior to July 1. None of this makes sense and David your explanation could be as valid as anything else I could point to. Who in their right (or left) mind would want to work here with that kind of uncertainty? It took a long time to hire Best in the first place and I can’t imagine how much longer it would take to hire the next person, even if it was the current assistant county manager. Yeah I like boring too from public officials, unless there’s an issue that really needs thorough evaluation. Boring still needs to be effective after all.

Re: tonight’s County Comissioner’s meeting, do you think there was ever a single moment where anyone was listening to anyone else? These people don’t like or respect each other, and they don’t care if we know it. That is so unfunny it’s not funny.
