The meat packing industry also tends to hire immigrants who are less likely to complain about conditions or to unionize. BB

Although many folks in NC and elsewhere in the South are very skeptical of unions, this is exactly the kind of situation that the National Labor Relations Act was written for and unions exist for. Very scary. Don’t plan to buy any Smithfiled products any time soon.
