Grimsley 21 – Dudley 13

You don’t get on TV when you lose.On the air.jpg  So notice the team that was on TV tonight (hint to the N&R’s  Daniels, Carlton, Hardin and Newsom, it wasn’t Dudley).

What a game.  The Whirlies were down 13-0 at halftime but emerged from the fieldhouse as a whole different team.

I asked Jack (who turned 17 today, by the way) how coach Shuping lit On the line.jpgsuch a fire under his charges during the break.  His sheepish answer was, “Coach was pissed. He challenged our manhood.”  Although Jack didn’t elaborate, I take that to mean Shuping called them a bunch of sissies for letting the Panthers get so far ahead and that his remarks weren’t aimed at disparaging the players’, um… well, family jewels.  But whatever… it worked. What a game!

I’m sure the N&R will have a few things to say about the game tomorrow but for now we are getting ready to play host to several members of the team and general hangers-on for a late night birthday/victory party for Jack and his team that is, dammit, for real.

Sat. morning update: Because she is a Grimsley believer, it is fitting that the N&R’s Kellie Dixon drew the Grimsley/Dudley assignment which became this morning’s sports front pager: Grimsley Rallies.  Photo-guy H. Scott Hoffman was there also and filed these shots of the game.Grimsley rainbow.jpg

Jerry Wolford drew the Page/Western game and caught a great shot of the perfectly formed rainbow that appeared over Greensboro just before 7:30 kickoff time.  Jerry’s photo made the print edition but I can’t find it online.  But never fear.

Daughter Josie grabbed my camera to document the fact that the rainbow didn’t only favor the Whirlies’ cross-town rival.

What happens in the locker room, stays in the locker room! Happy Birthday, Jack and Congratulations to the Whirlies.

The Pirates are claiming that rainbow, however!

Off to join the multitude of Happy Appy fans that will be invading Raleigh today! Hope the Hoggards have a great Labor Day weekend!

Congrats to the Pirates, Coach. You guys deserved at least one win this season.

We’ll see if red or blue is the dominant color in that rainbow the night of Sept. 29th, now won’t we?

Regards right back to you and yours this holiday weekend… go Appalachian!

Jack-Dot and I are proud of you and your team. The only way to make us more proud is for us to see you play one more game before you graduate. Maybe we can find a way to make it to G’boro before the season is over.Keep up the good work, and GO WHIRLIES!!!! We love you, Papa and Dot.

Hoggard, you know I love you.

You know I’m proud of your boy.

But I gotta say, you are starting to make me hate Grimsley football.

That must mean they are winning – all the time … let’s just call it the NC Tarheel syndrome.

I’m trying to limit my unabashedly partisan coverage to two posts per week so people won’t think I’m obsessed or anything

Hi David- I just got back from my first trip To a Navy home game (a great football game that Navy won over ECU). I must say I was heartbroken to have to miss the Dudley game. My nephew was sorely dissappointed that the Duldley drumline failed to show. The Blue Steel was armed and ready for the rare chance to compete.

I had bragged so much about the Whirlies to my pals- we all graduated from GHS in 1973- so we called Elizabeth from Annapolis late friday night to find out who won. Alas, All we could find out was that Dudley was up 13-0 and their drumline failed to show.
