FantaCity. A skeptic’s perspective.

Maybe its just me, but I just couldn’t help feeling a little put upon by this morning’s N&R.

The front page of the Local section features a story and large photograph about the opening of FantaCity out on West Market Street.  This is the latest of numerous N&R articles within the last year or so regarding the much needed re-development of the former Guilford Mills headquarters.

The thing that gave me pause was when I turned to B-2 to read the rest of the article.  Covering the whole of the facing page, B-3, was a full page ad also announcing FantaCity’s opening.  In their ad they identified as their initial tenants a nail salon, a Ta Kw-an Do studio and a convenience mart.  The ad goes on to list a group of mostly un-named, “coming soon” tenants.

Something that confused me in the N&R’s article was this statement from FantaCity’s owners about another, maybe, could be, possible future use of a portion of the development’s 140,000 sq ft of space…

…the city skateboard park funded by part of November’s $5 million parks and recreation bond referendums.

Oh really? I’m vice-chair of the Greensboro Parks & Rec Commission and I haven’t heard any whispers about placing this public facility on private property.  Not saying its a bad idea.  But, I must say, it is surprising news to me.

I’m going to drive out there this weekend and try to put to rest a gnawing skepticism about the development.  Something about the whole thing just isn’t sitting well with me.

It’s news to me as well. On Monday I asked Candice Bruton who handles planning for the Parks & Recreation Dept. if any decisons had been made about the placement of the park,. She responded no, but they were kicking around the idea of trying to put it near the downtown area.

Maybe the Skate board park could be near the new pool…. oh nevermind. No seriously, it needs to go somewhere where it will get some use…. nevermind again.

Yes, I agree lets put the skate board park near downtown. Dont forget all the new signs about no loitering, no skateboarding allowed on sidewalks, curbs, benches, railings, stairs, etc. So many shredders live around the downtown area anyway…………

A skateboard park in Greensboro is a major concession to the old fogy, stick in the mud ruling mentality. It’s like orange juice in your cereal instead of milk, it’s odd and doesn’t fit. Does the city have the creativity to encourage a fringe sport that appeals to young, anarchist, rebellious followers?

Some of these kids might be under the age of 18 and actually smoking cigarettes. Does the city want to encourage that kind of behavior? (sarcasm).

IOW, can the city create and run something that is the antithesis of it’s very bureaucratic soul, or will the need for authoritarian expression squelch the desire of the creative class to even use the park, deferring it’s use to the soccer mom hordes and Jaycee prodigies?
