Recall Small dot com

A website has launched to obtain “734 signatures needed” from District 1 voters to force a recall of Dianne Bellamy-Small.

In an email sent in support of Florence Gatten’s efforts (cc’d to me), petition organizer Tony Wilkins says, “Hogg, …I would be very interested in your opinion of a recall effort with only 10 months left in her term.”

My opinion is that I’d save my efforts and organization to get behind Bellamy-Small’s likely opponent, Luther Falls.  Or advance one of your own choosing.

But, if you want to go ahead, then by all means, go ahead… it is your right as a citizen.  You will probably obtain the needed 734 signatures in an afternoon of canvassing.   The Inside Scoop has looked at how such a recall works as outlined in the City Charter.

According to the N&R, Bellamy-Small reacted to Gatten’s call for her resignation with this, “I was elected by the people of my district and I have not heard from them that they wish for me to resign.”  That could be because she has insulated herself from the people she serves and because very few folks actually own fax machines, which is her preferred/only method of communication with the outside world.

Hopefully Wilkens has one so Bellamy-Small can be notified of what’s afoot within her district.

Tony also asked for my opinion. I told him I thought the effort would be more legitimate if it was spearheaded by someone who lives in TDBS”s district, but I was going by the address on the registration of the domain name,, which it turns out is American Furnituyre Warehouse (not in district 1), so Tony may live in District 1 for all I know. I think it makes a difference.

I rent an office at that address where I manage different websites. The registration of has nothing to do with American Furniture. I do live in Sandy Carmany’s district but the website developed after speaking with interested parties in TDBS’s district. I can not even sign the petition, just offering the website as assistance.
After a meeting today with the “interested parties” we will determine whether to go forward and name the five people on the petitioner’s committee or lay low and see what happens with Gatten’s request.
Thanks for your time and opinions Roch and Hogg. (sounds like a good name for a band!)

Sure, Tony. Just my two cents, but I hope it was helpful.

As far as I know you were the first to mention early Tuesday morning. By Tuesday night nearly 700 hits were logged. Is this the power of the Hogg Blog or do more people than we think really want her recalled?

Fear the Hogg, Tony. He’s all powerful…

Actually, I discovered after my posting that Roch had your link up on before I was able to type it out and hit send. Cone had it a little later, and he is the hit machine.

Good luck with your effort. It would be great if you would set up a blog to inform us as to how the signature drive is going. I suggest, after having gone through one of these petition things before with baseball stadiums, that you consult with the City Attorney’s office to make sure the wording on the petition passes legal muster. It WILL be scrutinized for validity.

    Thanks PS.

Can a petition like this be signed through the website with name, address and phone given…..or must it be done face to face?
