Skip is blogging and I’m responding

My County Commissioner, Skip Alston, launched a blog today.

While it would be easy enough to dredge up the ghosts of now-defunct blogs that have been started by and for other local elected officials over the years, I’m going to take a different tack: I welcome him without reservation, snark or preconception.

Meanwhile, in his first substantive post, he gives his position on funding Eastern Guilford H.S., which was completely destroyed by fire November 1.  Our school board has requested that the Commission borrow $53M through the use of a Certificate of Participation bond, which doesn’t require voter approval. Skip is against that idea, and offers… (caps are his, not mine)

“….IF THE SCHOOL BOARD SEES THE EASTERN HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT AS BEING AN EMERGENCY PRIORITY, THEY CAN REVISE THEIR CURRENT BOND PROJECTS AND TAKE OUT 53 MILLION DOLLARS TO REBUILD…”

Just a thought, but shouldn’t replacing a school that was completely destroyed by fire rise to everyone’s level of a bonafide ”EMERGENCY PRIORITY”? (again, caps are his, not mine)

While I understand the problems that have come up in dealing with the state and insurance companies on how much will ultimately get paid and by whom to rebuild Eastern, meanwhile… THOSE KIDS HAVE NO SCHOOL.  (caps mine)

Drop the politics, issue the bond, and build the damn school.

    Hey Hogg!
Is you is…or is you ain’t…gonna run for City Council?
    District 2 or At Large?
Some people “in the know” don’t know and want to know.

It is still being settled. So far the only agree-to payment is $8M as I understand it.

The issue is well covered in the linked-to N&R article above.
