Small efforts

I completely agree with today’s N&R editorial about the effort to recall Councilwoman Bellamy-Small as being ”unnecessary” and the Pulpit Forum’s worn-out take (via Cone) on the whole thing as not making sense.

The August 21st recall election is a waste of effort and the Pulpit Forum’s reaction to it is a waste of racially divisive words that only serve to inflame and perpetuate a “us vs them” mentality.

Gotta agree with you on this. While it’s not necessarily a bad thing to show that citizens can remove public officials outside of regular election schedules for what they feel are serious problems, the timing on this seems very redundant and will require a lot of taxpayer money in the process that could be focused elsewhere.

With a 2 year election cycle and a 5 to 6 month process for recall just when do you suggest is a good time for a recall election?
A good time is when the citizens of a district determine they can not sit idly by and put up with unsatisfactory representation.
Over 800 signatures were gathered in less than 3 weeks and over 90% of the voters approached signed the petition. Imagine how many signatures could have been gathered with more time.
The recall election is a strong statement from citizens of District 1 and I applaud their efforts, regardless of the timing.

I’m not disagreeing that it’s a good thing when voters can remove their representatives when they collectively feel they’re not being effectively represented. It just seems like the resolution of all of this could just have easily been done with the regular election schedule rather than having this special election. The process is what it is so I do not know what a “good time” is for a recall election.

Any time you have 800plus residents of Greensboro involved in anything political it is a good thing . There is never a “good ” time for a recall, it means that an elected official has betrayed the trust placed in them .We have needed more of these in our recent Council history, this time somebody stepped up and did it. I hope this election cycle will be a mass recall.
