I went by my polling place in Aycock Middle School at 8:00 this morning to cast my primary vote. Aycock is Greensboro’s precinct G01, meaning, it has been there a long, long time - in the same circa 1924 auditorium as it has always been.
First thing I noticed was that campaign signs were stuck in the lawn in front of another Aycock entrance about a half a block away from where people come to vote, indicating inattentiveness on the part of the 13 at-large candidates from which I had to choose.
Second thing I noticed was that I was only the third voter of the day indicating inattentiveness on the part of the electorate.

David, unfortunately it hadn’t gotten much better this afternoon. At 1:45 p.m., I was voter No. 15.
I was seventh at 7:15 at Lawndale Baptist Church. I also noticed that yard signs were not very near the most-used driveway. Bill Knight had it right, the rest seemed to be playing follow the leader down the road.
When I went out last night at about 7:30 p.m. to place campaign signs for a candidate only 1 of the precints had the signs up indicating that it was a polling place. Two of the precints had changed. Even after years of experience in doing this, and always paying attention to sign placement, I was a little confused. Add to that the ground being as hard as rock, and it was a frustrating night.
There were more than 15 poll workers at my polling place when I voted at 9:15 this morning. I would think all of them voted. There was also a parking lot half-full of cars.
I have placed signs for candidates before and I agree that this year was tough. I thought it was like a treasure hunt to find the voting signs after finding the polling places . I also understand now why the candidates don’t place their own signs on election eve I got in the bed about 2 am Tuesday and got out at 5:30 to begin campaigning . That’s politics.
