Breaking News!!!!

My garbage got collected on time, again, this morning.  Some of it fell out of the can and the garbage collector got out of his truck and picked it up.  Some people’s recycling cans weren’t emptied, but that was because they put them out on an off week.

A neighbor got some stuff stolen from one of his rental houses in the neighborhood.  He contacted the police.  They responded.

I turned on my kitchen faucet to rinse off some dishes, the water came out clean and palatable.  The waste water went to where waste water is supposed to go.

I noticed an animal control truck driving down Cypress Street today.  Seemed to be looking for strays.

I drove by our neighborhood park today.  The place was neat and clean and all of the playground equipment was new and in fine working order.  Several kids were playing there enjoying today’s surprising snow.

I’m hearing that Greensboro might be turning 200 years old in 2008.  Some celebrations are reportedly in the planning stages.  Could involve thousands of our citizens into something good.

Uncollected recycling … wasted water … stray animals roaming the streets … unshoveled snow in public parks … aging city infrastructure.

I see Mitch and Linda’s fingerprints all over this.

You know, the Communists provided a lot of services too. It’s a shame you couldn’t trust them.

Don;t get excited. That trash was shipped to some poor neighborhood in South Carolina. Enjoy that water while it lasts. There aint much left. If the cops did come ..I wonder if the sexually assaulted anyone along the way..Keep on carrying Mitch’s water…it is a safe way to avoid hit men and death threats..wonder why that cop pulled up Bledsoes info? was it the neighborly thing to do?

How inconsistent of them. After I moved into my current home, and paid over $200 in water bills belonging to previous owner(S), I had to pretty much gut it – got a 4 yard dumpster and filled it. The nice people from DH Griffin hauled it away.

Then, I had a new kitchen put in, and had to get rid of the boxes myself. I broke them down flat and very neatly condensed them into 4 neat bundles and put only 2 at a time out for pick up along with my tote. They emptied the tote but left the boxes. I emailed the city and the response was that that they would not pick those items up because we use totes and they don’t collect anything but the totes – this, after having OFTEN times put additional items out – and having them taken.

I ended up piling the bundles in my car, 2 at a time and putting them in the recycling dumpster at work.

Just yesterday, I had to process yet another payment to the city for another unpaid water bill from a previous owner that mysteriously popped up…..this is my second house in Greensboro in 3 years – my first house, I paid $324 in water bills that weren’t mine.

Since when are you required to pay previous owners water bills?? i know many people that have moved or left behind unpaid power, phone, water etc..why is the new owner required to pay?? dont these go to creditors for collection? will they get double paid if the money is collected? Will you get a refund??

as for GBO, i recently moved here and its VERY disturbing what is going on with the GPD. If they dont respond i guess i will have to protect myself, from intruders and them huh?

I’ve had to pay in excess of $500 in water bills that were not mine. I lived in one house for a year – when I went to sell it, the buyer’s attorney did a title search and located unpaid water bills – my attorney did the same thing when I purchased the house and there were NO unpaid bills listed. I couldn’t close the sale until I paid $324. Then for the house I bought after – I couldn’t close until I agreed to pay $217 in unpaid water bills – since the new purchase was a foreclosure, the seller being a bank refused – so, if I wanted to close – I had to pay.

The city claims the water bill follows the property, not the responsible party. Greensboro (according to my realtor) is the ONLY municipality in NC to still practice this foolishness.

With that said – it IS possible to file a claim with the title insurance company – but, you know how claims with insurance companies go – don’t cha?

I, too, have been left holding the bag on someone else’s water bill. Pissed me right off. There has to be a more equitable way to do that and still keep the water department solvent. How do other cities get their money MyTwoCents?

    Mebane,
I am considering but I’ve concerns about this fat boy running period. The only thing I’ve run for in the last 35 years was a political office and I lost miserably.

Are you and Hoggard running down Cypress Street? If so I might manage my short block on Textile. Too bad the route isn’t reversed as then I’d be going down hill.

Just as Nanastar said – it should be through collection agencies, and reports to credit bureaus. I think it’s ridiculous that GSO does it this way.

I am not kidding when I say I have paid in excess of $500 to the City of Greensboro for water bills other people have skipped out on.

This latest one I just paid yesterday, once the website is updated, I plan to take a screen shot and save it showing on this date – there are NO unpaid bills associated with this address – and if I get another notice down the road, I’m going to flip my lid.

The COG was able to get a law passed by the legislature allowing water bills to become leins on the property.
I have been, among other things in the rental house business a long time and over the years I have paid literally hundreds of water bills which were not mine. I’ve been told by attorney friends this is probably illegal, but to test it in the courts will costs tens of thousands of dollars. The damn COG Legal Department has found a way to turn the responsibility on to citizens instead of doing their job. . If most of you blogging only knew all that has gone on with the COG, the backstabbing, the undermining and the unethical things that I have seen happen over the years, you would not be too surprised with this latest fiasco.
I retired several years ago and left my son running our business. I was totally fed up after 40 years with the lies and the dishonesty. I sincerely hope that all of you interested in this current situation will not stop untill this whole damn mess is corrected and it might mean firing a lot of people. This problem didn’t just start 2 years ago, it been going on a long, long time. The thing that’s missing at the city hall in my opinion is INTEGRITY. Our leaders seem to be more interested in Politcal Correctness than doing what is right or wrong.
The action taken yesterday by the council is probably for the best. But if that action is all they are going to do, God help us.

The water department is implementing the cost-saving measure of radio read meters and the revenue increasing measure of monthly billing. Now may be a good time for them to revisit on whom they stick unpaid water bills.

I don’t understand why recyclables comes every second week now. Most packaging can be recycled and certainly applies to most of our refuse. I think the City should reverse that since it may force others to recycle more.

FYI…The city doesn’t operate animal control…The county does…Also, Greensboro is NOT the only municipality that levies a water lien against property for unpaid water bills.

I was told the State permits it – but that GSO is ONE of the only municipalities that actually still does it – I stand corrected and should not have said THE only one.
