Focus people

Being Greensboro and all, people are already retreating to their respective and familiar huddles over the allegations made by three black pastors this morning.

But, before we go into full Johnson & Johnson hate mode, it would be a good idea to first focus on the meat of the matter, which Cone boils down to three questions… “…were these records destroyed? If so, who ordered their destruction, and why? What was in the boxes?”

Personally, I wish that the Reverends would have left out all of the superfluous crap about Mary Rakestraw and Florence Gatten, because such rhetoric just opens them up as retribution mongers and cloudies the issue, which is, simply…  “…were these records destroyed? If so, who ordered their destruction, and why? What was in the boxes?”

By the way… it looks like David Wray’s lawyer won’t have to answer any “specific allegations” leveled toward his client, because, as far as I know, none were made against our former police chief by the Reverends.

I was in attendance for the briefing this morning and my recollection is that the Revs mentioned Mary Rakestraw, Florence Gatten and Trudy Wade only in response to reporters’ direct questions in the post-announcement q&a. Even in responding, the Revs seemed to take pains to not personalize matters. The press, on the other hand, seem to need personalities/scapegoats on all sides in order to ‘find’ the immediate story. Sigh. I was struck by the Revs efforts (seemingly futile given the tone of reporters’ questions) to keep trying to raise the dialogue to larger historical and contextual stuff.

Steve, see the statement the group released (second link in David’s original post).

Everyone seems to have forgotten the very first question David, which is of course: Was there anything to destroy? It seems because the good ministers of Gods word said it then it is just assumed to be a fact that there were “boxes” that were then destroyed so that no one could prove there were, or were not, any boxes.

My thought is that now that the now that the demonizing of David Wray seems to be coming to an end and not one allegation made against him has been proven true (in fact all so far have been proven false) then something else has to be thrown into the pot. Having seen their first attempts failed all concerned were clever enough to make sure this next charge was invulnerable to attack. BB

Perhaps I missed it, Brenda, but point me to how the allegations that Wray was less than forthcoming to the Manager and Council have been “proven false” …”in fact”, or otherwise.

Nothing has been “proven true” about the matter, either, but at least I understand the distinction and the definition of “proven”.

Steve, I was there as well, Rakestraw, Gatten and Wade were slammed in the printed hand out given to us before the press conference began and thus was the reasons reporters asked about them. Perhaps you didn’t get a copy? If not it’s posted at EdCone.com and at BelovedCommunityCenter.org

Correction: Wade wasn’t mentioned, only Gatten and Rakestraw.
