A Much Needed Policy

From an email by Gary Palmer, co-chair of Greensboro’s chapter of GLSEN:

“The Board of Education for Guilford County Schools, North Carolina’s third largest school district with an enrollment of more than 65,800 students and nearly 8,000 employees passed Policy AC, Discrimination-Free Environment (PDF File) at the January 13th, 2004 Board of Education meeting.”

….. (This policy covers) harassment, bullying, and discrimination based on an individual’s real or perceived race, color, sex, religion, creed, political belief, age, national origin, linguistic and language differences, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, socioeconomic status, height, weight, physical characteristics, marital status, parental status, or disability.  The Board prohibits any and all forms of harassment because of those differences….

“The policy proposal came from a committee designed to work on LGBT issues in the Guilford County Schools.  The committee was composed of individuals representing GLSEN Greensboro, PFLAG, NEA and various departments within the Guilford County Schools.

Congratulations to everyone who helped get this policy in place.  If all school systems adopt just such a policy, perhaps what happened to 7 year-old Marcus McLuarin back in December will be a thing of the past.
